Activity in brief

Plitvice Lakes National ParkLeaving Starigrad-Paklenica you drive in the direction of Zadar. In Maslenica you take the A1 highway in the direction of Zagreb until the Gornja Ploča exit. From there you follow signs for the Plitvice Lakes National Park. You pass Entrance No. 2 and park your car at the parking place {1} closest to the Entrance No. 1 {2}. At the entrance you buy your tickets. Boat rides and the usage of the train are included in the price. Using electric boat and panoramic train you can see all the lakes in one day – both the Upper Lakes with their abundant waterfalls and the Lower Lakes situated in the canyon.

The National Park is a system of constantly growing travertine barriers. Barriers dammed the river, forming a series of lakes and waterfalls. Soon after you enter the National Park, you will see a wonderful panorama of the Great Waterfall and Sastavci. The Great Waterfall (78 m) is the highest waterfall in Croatia. Sastavci is a beautiful system of cascades over the last travertine barrier. At Sastavci the Plitvice Lakes end and the Korana River begins. From the panorama point you go down to Novakovića Brod, the lowest lake. Immediately you will notice the limpid water of the lakes. Fish and ducks come right up to you because they live in a protected area and are used to people. After crossing the barrier, turn right, and soon you will admire the Great Waterfall {3} close up.

After taking photos at the Great Waterfall, hike back, but don’t cross the barrier again. Remaining on the same side of the lake, you can follow the hiking trail through the canyon of the Lower Lakes. At the end of the canyon you will come to a wide road. Turn right across the barrier under Kozjak Lake. Soon you’ll reach Kozjačka Draga {4} – a large meadow with lots of wooden tables. There you can buy your lunch and rest while you wait for the boat that will take you across Kozjak Lake.

After a pleasant boat ride, you’ll disembark at the boat arrival point {5} where the Upper Lakes Hiking Trail begins. Use every occasion to cross the barrier – in that way you’ll get the best view of the many crystal-clear waterfalls that shower anybody who approaches. Along the hiking trail, the roar of the cascades gives way to quiet lakes, bringing both relaxation and peace. When you arrive at train station No. 4 {6} close to the uppermost Prošćansko Lake, you can take a coffee break or eat something at the restaurant. The panoramic train will take you through the continental woods along the lakes to station No. 1 {7} situated between the main road and the canyon of the Lower Lakes. Leaving the train, continue in the same direction along the hiking trail above the canyon. Breathtaking panoramas will open during that last short hike until you finally return to the viewpoint from which you first admired the Great Waterfall and Sastavci. Before leaving the national park, take one last photo and say Zbogom—goodbye— to the unforgettable Plitvice Lakes.
